Effectiveness of community-based earthquake training on the knowledge of health cadres in disaster preparedness

Background: Indonesia is highly vulnerable to earthquakes, highlighting the need for optimal community preparedness. Health cadres play a strategic role in community education; however, their knowledge of earthquake preparedness still needs to be improved.
Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of community-based earthquake preparedness training in improving health cadres’ knowledge.
Methods: This pre-experimental study used a one-group design with repeated measurements in Kapanewon Pundong, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. A total of 30 health cadres who completed all study procedures were included in the final analysis. The 5.5-hour community-based earthquake preparedness training consisted of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. Knowledge was assessed using a 15-item questionnaire before training, immediately after training, and two weeks later. Data were analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA.
Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 11.10 ± 1.73 before training to 14.53 ± 0.57 immediately after training, followed by a slight decrease to 13.93 ± 0.91 at the two-week retention assessment. A significant difference in knowledge scores was observed across the three measurement times (F=58.284; p<0.001; partial η²=0.76).
Conclusion: Periodic refresher training is recommended to maintain knowledge retention and strengthen the capacity of health cadres in disaster preparedness
