Analysis of metabolic syndrome risk factors in prospective hajj pilgrims of KBIH “X” Yogyakarta in 2026

Abstract

Background: Hajj involves intense physical activities that demand optimal health, necessitating thorough medical preparation. The Indonesian Ministry of Health reports that 65% of pilgrims are categorized as high-risk, including those with non-communicable diseases such as metabolic syndrome.
Objective: This study aims to identify risk factors for metabolic syndrome among Hajj pilgrims.
Methods: This observational cross-sectional study utilized secondary health data from all prospective pilgrims at KBIH "X" Yogyakarta. Metabolic syndrome was defined using NCEP-ATP III criteria. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate (Chi-square), and multivariate (binary logistic regression) methods.
Results: Univariate analysis revealed a metabolic syndrome prevalence of 35.6% (48 respondents). Bivariate analysis showed no significant association for gender (p=0.790; OR=1.132; 95% CI: 0.454–2.823), age, occupation, or education. However, multivariate analysis identified gender as the sole significant risk factor (p=0.023; OR=2.340).
Conclusion: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among pilgrims was 35.6%. While age, occupation, and education were not significant, gender was determined to be a significant risk factor for metabolic syndrome in this population.
