Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that protect the body from the negative effects of unstable molecules that have lost electrons. The Polyalthia longifolia are known to contain compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and phenols, which have the potential for antioxidant activity. This study employ an experimental methodology to ascertain the chemical composition and assess the efficacy of 70% ethanol extract of Polyalthia longifolia in scavenge free radicals. The extraction process was carried out by maceration for 24 hours over two cycles. The three-color reagent method was used to test for phytochemicals, and the DPPH method was used to test for antioxidant activity using spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 517 nm. The DPPH method was chosen because it is simple, fast, and sensitive; requires only a small amount of sample; and is capable of detecting even weak antioxidants. The IC50 value of the sample was compared to the IC50 value of vitamin C to determine the antioxidant activity of the extract. The study results indicate that the extract of Polyalthia longifolia has very strong antioxidant activity (14,720 µg/mL). This study provides new data on the antioxindant potential of Polyalthia longifolia as a natural source.
