The Relationship Of Oral Hygiene Compliance To The Severity Of Oral Mucositis In Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy At Panembahan Senopati Hospital
Abstract
Background: The World Health Organization estimates that the number of cancer patients will continue to increase and based on the SKI 2023, cancer affects all age groups. Cancer is a health disorder that has the potential to affect the entire limb. One of the therapies that is widely done is chemotherapy, but this therapy has side effects, one of which is oral mucositis. Oral mucositis is a highly debilitating condition characterized by erythema, edema, and ulceration of the oral mucosa. Patients are strongly advised to do oral hygiene or oral care.
Objective: To determine the relationship between oral hygiene adherence to the severity of oral mucositis in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Methods: This study used a correlational study with a cross-sectional approach. The number of samples was 52 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy using purposive sampling techniques. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire on the level of oral hygiene compliance and the Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) with a statistical test of the sommers'd test.
Result: The results of this study showed that oral hygiene compliance that underwent chemotherapy was the most adherent in sufficient compliance (65%) for 34 respondents, while the severity of oral mucositis had a moderate severity (92.3%) for 48 respondents. Bivariate analysis showed no significant relationship between oral hygiene adherence to the severity of oral mucositis (p-value = 0.191). Accompanied by the results of cross-tabulation of oral hygiene compliance, most of the respondents experienced moderate oral mucositis severity as much as 32 reonden (94.1%), while high adherence also mostly experienced moderate severity as many as 16 respondents (88.9%).
Conclusion: This study showed that oral hygiene compliance who underwent chemotherapy mostly had a sufficient level of compliance (65%) of 34 respondents, while the severity of oral mucositis had a moderate severity (92.3%) of 48 respondents.
