Background: The health problems of international tourists are increasing, but the competence of doctors in Indonesia in travel medicine has not been described comprehensively.
Objective:This study aims to analyze the competencies of doctors on duty at the Travel Health Center in Bali, including knowledge, communication skills, and pre-travel consultation.
Methods: The method used is mixed methods with an exploratory sequential design. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, while quantitative data were obtained through self-reflection modified from Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow questionnaires. Data analysis involves thematic analysis for qualitative data and descriptive statistics as well as inferential for quantitative data.
Results: The results showed that the majority of doctors had good competence in patient communication and travel-related health risk management. However, knowledge about vaccination and literacy of travel health resources still needs to be improved. Only a small percentage of respondents had formal training in travel medicine.
Conclusion:The implications of this study are the need to develop a travel medicine curriculum, organize certified short training, and provide evidence-based practice guidelines to improve tourism health services in Bali. This effort is expected to strengthen Bali's position as a world-class tourist destination with quality medical tourism and travel health services.
